Review your resume

When was the last time you updated your resume? Since it is the end of the year and you may have a little extra time, I decided to provide some ideas to help you get started.

Here are a few easy tips for ensuring your resume is going to be perceived as current.

  • Avoid all CAPS! Everyone realizes that using all capital letters is perceived as yelling in emails – now apply this same idea to your resume. Of course, if you work for the IRS or FBI, know that we can make an exception to the rule.
  • Include your cell number and your email address so that employers can contact you. The days of listing more than one phone number (and labeling them home, cell, and work) are over.
  • Write a competency-based summary and competency-based accomplishment statements. My books, Competency-Based Resumes and Competency-Based Interviews, provide more information on how to develop and write a competency-based resume than I possibly can in one blog, although I will provide periodic tips.
